Privacy policy

TypeNihongo (“we”) is a small, independently run Japanese typing site at typenihongo.com. This page explains what we collect and why. The short version: we keep only what we need to run your account and your practice, and we never sell data.

Without an account

Your settings and practice progress are stored in your own browser (localStorage). They are not sent to us. Page views are counted with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which uses no cookies and does not identify you.

With an account

  • Google sign-in: your name, email address and profile picture, used only to identify your account.
  • Practice data: per-kana typing statistics, finished drills (time, speed, accuracy) and the days you practised, so your progress and streak follow you across devices.
  • AI lessons: the topics or sentences you enter and the lessons generated from them. If you tick “share in the public library” when creating a topic lesson, the lesson (never your name or account) may be published at typenihongo.com/learn after review. “Say it in Japanese” requests are never published.
  • Payments: handled entirely by Stripe. We store your Stripe customer ID, plan and credit balance — never your card details.
  • Cookies: one sign-in session cookie, which is needed for your account to work. No advertising or tracking cookies.

Services that process data for us

  • Cloudflare — hosting, database and analytics.
  • Google — sign-in, and the Gemini API, which receives the text of your AI lesson requests.
  • Microsoft Azure — text-to-speech, which receives the Japanese text being read aloud.
  • Stripe — payments and subscriptions.

Your choices

Signing out removes the copy of your progress from that browser. To download or delete your account and everything linked to it, email support@typenihongo.com from the address you signed in with and we will do it within 30 days. TypeNihongo is not directed at children under 13.
